Message from the General Assembly Chair

Having served as Chair of the RFID in Europe Management Board for the first 2 years, I was very pleased to have the opportunity of taking over as Chair of the General Assembly for the final year of our project.  Whilst RFID in Europe has undoubtedly had its successes, there is still a mountain to climb before the millions of SME’s across the 27 member states recognise the value that RFID can bring to their business.  That is why one of the most important topics during this final year of the EU supported project is the consideration of continuing the drive past the closing date of the project at the end of February 2012.  We have an enthusiastic ‘sustainability’ committee.  We are discussing the future opportunities.  Why would anyone wish to join a new self supporting RFID in Europe organisation?  What would they want to get from such an organisation?  How much would they be prepared to pay?

There is no doubting the opportunity exists.  Governments are slowly, but surely, recognising the benefits that RFID can bring to so many areas and sectors.

I welcome the challenges that this final year of our thematic network offers.  One thing is for sure.  We have an active and enthusiastic Management Board that is willing the sustainability committee to succeed.  We will.  What is important is that the new format should have the blessing and support of all current members and, of course, be attractive to prospective ones.  If you have not already joined RFID in Europe, I would urge you to do so.  That way you can be part of the decision making of the future shape and feel of the sustained organisation.

Ian Smith,

Chair, General Assembly RFIDinEurope
